In another thrilling edition of the $500,000 Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m), three-year-old Point of Law has secured the ninth Golden Ticket into this year’s $10.2 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Trained by Victoria's leading trainer, Ciaron Maher, Point of Law produced a strong staying performance under a confident ride from Ethan Brown, beating home Joseph O'Brien duo Small Fry and Omni Man. The victory has propelled the gelding into favouritism for the Lexus Melbourne Cup which will be run in 13 days at Flemington.

Featuring one of the strongest fields in its long history, the 2026 Geelong Cup proved to be another memorable edition in only its second year as a Lexus Melbourne Cup Golden Ticket race.

A proven pathway to the Lexus Melbourne Cup, the Geelong Cup has previously been won by eventual Melbourne Cup champions including Media Puzzle, Dunaden and Americain.

The race continues to strengthen its reputation as a key lead-up for connections seeking a place in Australia's most prestigious staying contest.

Connections will make their final bid for a Lexus Melbourne Cup spot this weekend, with Flemington hosting the Cox Plate and Moonee Valley Gold Cup for the first time.

VRC Chief Racing Officer Leigh Jordon said Point of Law's win provided great momentum leading into the Lexus Melbourne Cup.

“It was another incredible edition of the Geelong Cup. To see such a strong field of stayers all vying for that golden ticket into the Lexus Melbourne Cup is fantastic and further proves just how pivotal the Geelong Cup is in the landscape of our great race,” Jordon said.

“Congratulations to the Geelong Racing Club on yet another hugely successful day, and we welcome and congratulate Point of Law and his connections into the 2026 Lexus Melbourne Cup."
