One hundred and fifty years embodied on one Saturday as one of the great races on the Australian calendar, and the spring carnival is set.

The gates have been drawn for the 150th running of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, and the puzzle is a beauty. Cosmic Crusader, the Turnbull Stakes hero, has landed gate 17. If the emergencies miss a start, he’ll jump from stall 14, a fortune-changing shift in a race decided by inches. Fellow import Wine Dark Sea, a well-fancied contender, will have to work for it from wide gate 19. Another overseas raider, Enfjaar, has the inside alley under Ray Dawson, and the rail has launched plenty of Cups before. The champion, defending Cup winner Half Yours drew gate 7, with Mark Zahra back in the saddle for Team McEvoy. He’s done it once, and he wants it again. But the real firepower belongs to Ciaron Maher. He has five guaranteed starters: Saint George (2), Zahrann (4), Royal Supremacy (8), Middle Earth (11) and Kings Valley (12). Zahrann is the one drawing the most attention as the horse everyone is talking about.

An international challenge, a defending champion and a powerhouse stable armed to the teeth, all rolled into 2400 metres of pure theatre.

The 150th Caulfield Cup. History is on the line.
